I'm truly blessed to have been given the opportunity to care for Luciney during his hospitalization. He was so much more than a patient to me, he became my friend. I've been a nurse for 9 years and have cared for many patients in that time, but none of whom I developed such a genuine, special bond with as I did with "Lu". We instantly connected when immediately after transplant, despite how sick he was, he begged me for a haircut, I promised I was no barber but I'd give it a solid try, we found buzzers, and off the hair went, it might have been a little patchy and there might have been a little blood shed but he lit up with his infamous smile, grinning from ear to ear with the results. He could barely speak at this point but held a mirror up and said "I look good!". I will always remember that day. Along with the days when he felt a little better and we'd sneak off the unit to get steak and cheese sandwiches & ice cream. We sat outside and he told stories of his life & his family. He loved to talk about his wife, 3 boys and brazil (especially how good the food is!) I've never met a patient who had such a positive outlook no matter how dark the days may have been, Lu found a way to make every day brighter, his strength throughout this journey was incredible. I'll miss him deeply, and his smile will forever be in my memory. Sending love and prayers to his amazing family and support system near and far.

I will miss you so much Lu. I always looked forward to passing by your hospital room just to say hi. Your smile is unforgettable and I am honored to have met and cared for you. You have taught me so much and I will never forget you.

Luciney lit up the room with his smile. His light was like none we ever knew before. It warmed and cheered us, even when he was experiencing great pain, uncertainty and sorrow. He met obstacles with great heart and hopefulness. He loved his family so deeply, and told us of his dreams about them. He missed Soane and Darrick and Travis so much, and his mother and friends, but Wyland was able to bring him strength and hope. He was cared for with great tenderness and sacrifice by Joao and Idalina and their children, and by Glaucia, Angela, and Glaucia's kind children, as well as his family members, co-workers and medical providers, from doctors and murses to patient care technicians and transporters. He loved his doctors and nurses, especially Laura and his transplant nursing team on Farr 10. The medical providers learned a great deal about his condition through caring for him, and others who are ill will benefit from their learning. He said he felt honored to be visited by Francesco and Daniela, John D and others.
He loved to eat, and amazed us with his ability to eat many thousands of calories in order to regain strength. He was an artist, a plumber and builder, a hotelier, surfer, a biker, a trusted and astonishingly strong co-worker. He kept up hope until the very last moments: if sheer will could have saved him, it would have.. We love you, sweet LucineyHe endured when no one else could have done so. Luciney made our lives brighter by loving us and by cherishing our love for him. Even when very sick, he was a beautiful, kind man who we wanted so much to keep with us, always. Now we keep him with us in our hearts, and will leep him there forever.
