Marlborough- It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Thomas Gordon Benway Sr., who peacefully departed this world at the age of 78 on July 17, 2026, surrounded by his family at UMASS University Campus in Worcester.

Born on November 16, 1947, in Marlborough, and was the son of the late Francis R. and Genevieve (Niensczyk) Benway. He was raised in Hudson. A talented basketball player, he graduated from Hudson Catholic High School in 1966 and proudly served in the United States Army from 1967 to 1970.

Tom's career in the shoe industry included valued roles at Frye Boot and The Rockport Company, contributing significantly to his community in Marlborough.

In August 1973, Tom married his true love, Cynthia (Guilbert) Benway. For nearly 53 years, they shared a life rich with love and commitment. Together, they raised a son and a daughter, forming a close-knit family that remained central to his life.

Tom is survived by his beloved wife Cynthia; his daughter Tammy Menear and her husband Mike; his son Thomas (Tommy) Benway Jr. and his wife Joanna. He also leaves behind three cherished granddaughters: Ashley (Boudreau) White and her husband Cody, Madison Boudreau, and Michaela Menear. Numerous family members and friends will forever hold dear his memory.

Known for his fun-loving spirit, Tom enjoyed reminiscing about his youthful days in Hudson, playing cribbage, listening to music, and fishing. As a proud member of The Italian American Club and The Sons of Italy in Marlborough, he relished participating in pitch tournaments and music bingo, and was an avid fan of the Boston Red Sox.

Tom’s role as “Papa” to his granddaughters brought him immense joy. With pride, he celebrated their achievements and shared in their joys, leaving them with lasting memories of his love and support.

Although deeply missed, Tom’s quiet strength, kind heart, and unwavering devotion to his family have imparted lessons and memories that will forever remain with those who knew him.

He was predeceased by his brother, Francis Benway, and his sister, Genevieve (Benway) Witkowski.

Visiting hours will be held on Thursday, July 23, 2026, from 6-8 PM at Collins Funeral Home on Lincoln Street, Marlborough. A service will be held Friday at 10 AM in the Collins Funeral Home, 378 Lincoln Street, Marlborough. . Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery, Wilson Street, Marlborough.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Marlboro Girls Softball or Marlborough Boys and Girls Club, continuing Tom’s legacy of supporting youth and community.
