Sister Dorothy Moore, RGS died on June 5, 2008 at Good Shepherd Center in Marlborough after a long illness. She was 86 years of age and had been a Sister of the Good Shepherd for 62 years. She was educated in the New Bedford public schools and graduated from Fisher Business College in Boston before entering the Good Shepherd Novitiate in Peekskill, N.Y. in 1945 to begin her life-long career ministering to women in need, with special focus on teen-age girls. Sr. Dorothy was certified as a child care supervisor by St. Louis University; in 1972 she received her Bachelor's degree in Music at Anna Maria College in Paxton, MA. In 1978 she received her Master's degree in secondary education from St. John's University in Jamaica, NY. A talented musician, she enhanced her work as child care supervisor and as business teacher at Mt. Florence and Villa Loretto in Peekskill, NY, Morristown, NJ, Brooklyn, NY, Dix Hills, NY, and in Marlborough, MA. She helped to establish the Juniorate in Jamaica, NY for the newly professed sisters and with the reorganization of the Springfield program before being asked back to Dix Hills as a teacher and director of the Glee Club. She was subsequently missioned to Marlborough, MA as local superior and at the end of her term began a CPE program in hospital chaplaincy at Worcester State Hospital, MA and at Cabrini Medical Center in New York City, where she also served as a hospital chaplain. Certified by the National Association of Catholic Chaplains, she was much in demand as a hospital chaplain with her many talents and experience and served in this capacity in the following settings: St. Luke's Hospital, New Bedford, St. Anthony's, and Bedford Towers, also in New Bedford. She served as choir director and music teacher at the Church of the Holy Spirit in E. Greenbush, NY and accompanied the Junior Choir at Holy Family/Holy Name School in New Bedford. Throughout her career she provided the music for the Good Shepherd congregation and schools, and even in her retirement to Marlborough she continued to inspire with her music and was and member of the choir at St. Matthias Church in Marlborough. There she was also a lector and engaged in pastoral ministry. Sister Dorothy is survived by her two sisters, Mildred Brien and Eleanor Mournighan of Cranston, RI, several nieces and nephews and all her Sisters in the Good Shepherd Community. A Mass of Christian burial will be offered for Sr. Dorothy at Good Shepherd Center Chapel, 406 Hemenway St, Marlborough, MA on Monday, June 9, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. Burial will take place at Holy Family Cemetery in Rockland, MA. Visiting hours will be at Good Shepherd Center Chapel in Marlborough on Sunday, June 8, 2008 from 4pm to 8 pm with a prayer service at 6:30 pm.
