MARLBOROUGH -- Sister Anne Marie Peterson (Sister Mary Fidelis), died Tuesday, Oct. 31, 2006, on her 88th birthday, at Bolton Manor Nursing Home in Marlborough, after a long illness. She had been a sister of the Good Shepherd for 67 years. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., the daughter of John and Anne (O'Sullivan) Peterson, she entered the Good Shepherd Novitiate in 1939 in Peekskill, N.Y., after graduating from St. Brendan High School in Brooklyn, and began her long career caring for the poor and marginalized in society, with special focus on teenage girls and women. After professing her final vows, her skills in working with young people found expression at St. Germaine Residential Treatment Center in Peekskill, and she modeled the Good Shepherd charism for the young novices as she served in a variety of roles as director of the Reception Unit and infirmarian, as child care supervisor, and as director of food service for more than 200 girls. She was subsequently missioned to Guardian Angel Home in Troy, N.Y., as bookkeeper, a post she also held at Madonna Heights in Brooklyn and Huntington, N.Y., at Euphrasian Residence in New York City, at Park Slope Residence Project Outreach in New York, and at Morristown Memorial Hospital in Morristown, N.J. In the 1980s Sister Anne Marie was involved in pastoral care at Mary Immaculate Hospital in Jamaica, N.Y., and as alcoholism counselor and pastoral care in Albany, N.Y., and she continued to serve in pastoral care at St. Patrick Parish in Albany in 2000. Sister Anne Marie was missioned to Good Shepherd Center in Marlborough in 2006. She leaves her nephews, Ken Peterson of Danville, N.H., and Robert of Vancouver, and her niece, Joan Winkler of Los Altos, Calif.; and many friends. A Mass of Christian burial will be offered Friday, Nov. 3, at 10 a.m., by the Rev. Francis O'Connor of Albany, N.Y., at Good Shepherd Center. Visiting hours will be today, from 4 to 8 p.m., with a prayer service at 6:30 p.m. at the Good Shepherd Center.
