Obituary

HARWICH- Sister Florence Divine Child Lucas, RGS, a member of the Contemplative Community died on Wednesday, May 2, 2007 at EPOCH of Harwich after a long illness. She was 93 years of age and was a Contemplative Sister for 72 years. A native of Kingston, New York she was the daughter of John and Edith (Ellison) Lucas and was the eldest and only girl in her family, having three younger brothers, all deceased. In 1935, Sister entered the Sisters of the Good Shepherd, Contemplative Community, in Brooklyn, New York. She professed her First Vows July 22, 1937. Sister Florence lived her forth Vow to Pray for the Salvation of All Persons, especially those served by the Good Shepherd Congregation, to the fullest. She prayed for all the suffering of the world. Through out her life Sister Florence also served the community by doing various assignments such as, secretarial tasks, bookkeeping, cooking, and in the Altar Bread Department she baked the host for many Parishes. In 1986 Sister Florence was appointed the Leader of the Community and continued this appointment for six years. Due to failing health she resided at Good Shepherd Center, our Retirement Community, for seven years before joining the Sisters at EPOCH of Harwich, Nursing and Rehab Center. The staff and residents at EPOCH will miss her. Nieces, Nephews and Grand Nieces and Nephews survive Sister Florence. Visiting hours at Good Shepherd Center, 406 Hemenway Street, Marlboro will be held on Friday, May 4, 2007 from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm. There will be a Prayer Service at 6:30 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Good Shepherd Center Chapel in Marlboro on Saturday, May 5, 2007 at 10:00 am .Interment will be in Mount Benedict Cemetery in West Roxbury. Expressions of sympathy in Sister Florence's memory may be made to the Good Shepherd Retirement Fund, 406 Hemenway Street, Marlboro, MA 01752. Funeral arrangements are under the Direction of the Fitzgerald & Collins Funeral Home (www.SFCFH.com), 378 Lincoln Street, Marlborough. St. Mary Euphrasia founded the Sisters of the Good Shepherd, a worldwide Congregation, in France in 1835. They came to Boston in 1867, to Marlboro in 1964 and to Harwich in 1991.
