Obituary

HARWICH Sister Rosalie Imelda (Chichina Spampinato) died at Epoch at Harwich Nursing Center on Thursday, July 10, 2008, after a long illness. She was 88 years of age and had been a Contemplative Sister of the Good Shepherd for 66 years. Sister Rosalie Imelda was born in Saskatchewan, Canada, the daughter of the late Antonio and Margaret (Oche) Spampinato. She entered the Good Shepherd Novitiate in Peekskill, N.Y., in 1942, to prepare for her long career as a contemplative sister, devoting her time to work and prayer, in support of the community's mission - to be life-bearers to and for the poor of the world, especially women and girls in need. Sister Rosalie Imelda professed her final vows on July 22, 1954. Sister was first missioned to Mt. Florence in Peekskill, N.Y., where she proved to be an excellent seamstress. This led to a request from Hartford, Conn., for her services, and here, too, she continued her prayerful support for the success of the community's residential treatment center for young women. During her 24 years in Connecticut, she was assigned to the Vestment Department, where her artistry was especially valued. She also served in the Altar Department in Hartford. Recalled to Peekskill in 1972, her talents once again were of service in the vestment department and her work was welcomed in the Altar Bread Department as well. During these 14 years in Peekskill, she also exercised her culinary skills for the community. In 1986, she was missioned to the Contemplative community in Trenton, N.J., where for 10 years, she worked in the Altar Bread Department and was also asked to be the cook and once again she served delicious meals to the community. In 1992, Sister Rosalie Imelda celebrated her golden jubilee of profession with family and friends. In 1996, she was missioned to Good Shepherd Center in Marlborough, and subsequently to Epoch at Harwich Nursing Center, where as a retired sister, she continued her prayerful ministry for the works of the community. Sister Rosalie Imelda is survived by her Good Shepherd sisters. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered for Sister Rosalie Imelda on Tuesday, July 15, by the Rev. Robert Rivard at Good Shepherd Center at 11 a.m. There will be a prayer service on Monday, July 14, at 6:30 p.m. Burial will take place in Mt. Benedict Cemetery in West Roxbury. Calling hours are Monday, from 4 to 8 p.m., in Good Shepherd Center. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Fitzgerald and Collins Funeral Home, 378 Lincoln St., Marlborough. Expressions of sympathy in Sister Rosalie's memory may be made to the Good Shepherd Retirement Fund, 406 Hemenway St., Marlborough.
