Obituary

HARWICH - Sister Marie Hermann (Sr. Marie deLourdes), 80, died Monday, Dec. 17, 2007, at Epoch of Harwich in Harwich after an illness. She had been a Sister of the Good Shepherd for 50 years. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., the daughter of Max Charles and Mary Jane (Higgins) Hermann, she attended St. Agatha's School and Mercy Juniorate in Brooklyn and received her bachelor's degree in elementary education from Fordham University. Sister Marie entered the Good Shepherd Novitiate on Feb. 28, 1957, to prepare for her lifelong ministry to the poor and those marginalized by society, with special emphasis on women and teenage girls. She made Final Vows on Sept. 12, 1964. Her skills as a child-care supervisor were early recognized, and she served in this role in Villa Loretto, Peekskill, N.Y.; Wickatunk, N.J., and Mount Florence, Peekskill, Albany and Huntington, N.Y. In 1980 she became involved with the ``Women in Need'' program at St. Anne's in New York City and also the same ministry on 14th Street, New York. In 1984 she became a chaplain in prison ministry for 10 years at the New York City Correctional Institution for Men. In 1994 she served as administrative chaplain at Rikers Island, New York City, and in 2004 she was involved in pastoral care at the Cabrini Adult Day Care Center in New York City. She leaves her sister, Dolores Guner of Florida; her sisters-in-law, Nancy Hermann and Madeline Hermann; and several nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian burial will be offered Friday, Dec. 21, at 11 a.m., at Good Shepherd Center, 406 Hemenway St., Marlborough, by the Rev. Robert Rivard, Sons of Mary. Burial will be in Mount Benedict Cemetery, West Roxbury. Visiting hours are Thursday, Dec. 20, from 5 to 8 p.m., at Good Shepherd Center, with a prayer service at 6:30 p.m. Expressions of sympathy in her memory may be made to the Good Shepherd Retirement Fund, 406 Hemenway St., Marlborough, MA 01752.
