Obituary

MARLBOROUGH- Sister Mary Magdalen, RGS (Doris Irene Dubois) died on Monday February 5, 2007 at Epoch Senior Health Care Center of Harwich, MA after a long illness. She was 80 years of age and had been a Sister of the Good Shepherd for 58 years. Sister Mary Magdalen was born in Chicopee, MA, the daughter of John B. and Irene (Ouelette) Dubois. She attended St. Joan of Arc Grammar School and Chicopee High School and entered the Good Shepherd Novitiate in 1948 in Peekskill, N.Y., where she began her formal training for the Good Shepherd mission of rehabilitation of women in need, with special focus on teen-age girls and families An outstanding seamstress, she began her career by training young women in vocational sewing in the community's robery, making habits for the sisters. Her skill in forming the young led to her appointment as formation directress and superior of the Contemplative Sisters' Novitiate at Mt. Florence in Peekskill. This led to her appointment as superior of the professed community in Garrison, NY and then provincial director of all the Contemplative communities in the New York region. Subsequently she was chosen as delegate to the Good Shepherd Generalate in Rome, a role that took her to all the Good Shepherd communities located in 67 countries in the world. Before coming to Marlborough, she was Coordinator of the Good Shepherd community at the provincialate in Jamaica, N.Y. In addition to these many responsible positions, Sister Mary Magdalen was also engaged in retreat work during her various posts in the community. She celebrated her Golden Jubilee on August 15, 1998 at Good Shepherd Center with many relatives and friends. On December 1, 2004 Sister Mary Magdalen was missioned to Epoch of Harwich, where in her ministry of prayer she continued to reach out to all in need of support and help. Sister Mary Magdalen is survived by her brother, Thomas Dubois, and his wife, Terry; and many nieces and nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. Visiting hours at Good Shepherd Center will be held on Sunday, February 11 from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. o'clock. There will be a Prayer Service at 6:30 P.M. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at Good Shepherd Center Chapel on Hemenway Street, Marlborough, MA on February 12, 2007 at 10 A.M. by Rev. Robert Rivard. Interment will be at Mt. Benedict Cemetery in West Roxbury, MA. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Fitzgerald & Collins Funeral Home (www.SFCFH.com), 378 Lincoln Street, Marlborough. Expressions of sympathy in Sister Mary Magdalen's memory may be made to the Good Shepherd Retirement Fund, 406 Hemenway Street, Marlborough, MA. The Sisters of the Good Shepherd, a world-wide congregation was founded in France by St. Mary Euphrasia in 1829, in Boston in 1867, in Marlborough in 1964 and Harwichport, 1993.
