Obituary

Sister Dorothy Margaret Brown died on November 21, 2023 at Bethany Health Care Center, Framingham, MA, after a long illness. She was 98 years of age and had been a Contemplative Sister of the Good Shepherd for 79 years.

Sister Dorothy Margaret was born in 1924 in Roxbury, MA, the daughter of Joseph and Emma (Heroux) Brown. Sister graduated from Mary Immaculate High School in Providence, RI. In 1944 Sister entered the Contemplative Sisters of the Good Shepherd in Providence, RI to begin her training in the life and work of the Contemplative Sisters. Sister made her first vows in 1947 and made her final profession in 1957. For many years Sister worked in the Sewing Department and faithfully devoted her life of work and prayer for the Good Shepherd mission.  In 1955 Sister was missioned to Brooklyn, NY. In 1963 the Good Shepherd community moved from Brooklyn, NY to Dix Hill, NY where Sister Dorothy Margaret continued her work in the Good Shepherd mission at Madonna Heights.  Sister's hand work was exquisite and a sought-after item in the gift shop at Madonna Heights. Sister Dorothy was a member of the Brooklyn and Madonna Heights community for over 50 years. In 2008 Sister was missioned to the contemplative community in Wickatunk, NJ. In 2010 Sister Dorothy retired to the Good Shepherd Center in Marlborough, MA where she continued her ministry of prayer.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered for Sister Dorothy Margaret on Tuesday November 28 at 10:00 AM in St. Matthias Church, 409 Hemenway Street, Marlborough. Burial will follow in Mount Benedict Cemetery, West Roxbury. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Collins Funeral Home(collinsfuneral.com) , 378 Lincoln Street, Marlborough.  Expressions of sympathy in Sister Dorothy Margaret's memory may be made to the Good Shepherd Retirement Fund, 420 Hemenway Street, Apt. 466, Marlborough, MA 01752.  The Sisters of the Good Shepherd were founded by St. Mary Euphrasia Pelletier in Angers, France in 1835, in the United States (Louisville, KY) in 1843, and in Boston in 1867.
