MARLBOROUGH - Richard L. McGovern, 85, of Marlborough died Wednesday, Nov. 25, 2009 at Marlborough Hills Health Care Center. The husband of Alice V. (Walker) McGovern for the past 61 years, he was born in Framingham, the son of the late Henry P. and Edwina (Smith) McGovern, and was a 1942 graduate of Marlborough High School. Richard was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, serving in the Asia Pacific Theater. For 41 years, he was a product manager at Dennison Manufacturing in Framingham before retiring in 1988. Richard enjoyed bowling, golfing and gardening.
He leaves three sons, Richard L. and his wife Alice McGovern of Templeton, Robert C. McGovern and Douglas M. McGovern, both of Marlborough, and a daughter, Joanne McGovern of Clinton; a brother, Raymond McGovern of St. Petersburg, Fla., and a sister, Marjorie Vallee of Marlborough; four grandchildren, Richard P. McGovern of Leominster, Christopher M. Stanwyck of Clinton, and Robert C. McGovern, Jr. and Kyle M. McGovern, both of Marlborough; two great-grandchildren, Richard W. "Will" McGovern and Isabel "Bella" McGovern, both of Leominster; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
A celebration of his life will be held Friday, Dec. 4, at 1 p.m., at the Lincoln Chapel of the Fitzgerald & Collins Funeral Home (www.CollinsFuneral.com), 378 Lincoln Street, Marlborough. Burial with military honors will follow in Maplewood Cemetery, Pleasant Street, Marlborough. A time of visitation will be held prior to the service, from noon to 1 p.m. Flowers may be sent or donations may be made in his memory to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701.
