IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Nicholas
White
June 2, 1979 – November 6, 2007
Nicholas Adam White, treasured son of Jerry and Jean Baker White, was born June 2, 1979, in Presque Isle Maine, joining brothers Jerry, Nathan, sister Kate. He was followed by brother Sebastian. Moving to North Haven Island at age 4, he developed a profound love of, and respect for the sea, emotions matched only by time spent in the deep woods of Northern Maine when his family moved there in 1990. During his high school years, he returned to North Haven for summer work, thereby ensuring his ties to that special place were maintained.. Up North, he discovered that he thoroughly enjoyed winter sports, especially risking life, limb, and his parents' nerves as he snowboarded fearlessly from every precipice he could find. With the inspiration of his Uncle Robert, it was no surprise to anyone who knew Nick that he became a registered Maine Guide by the time he graduated from Wisdom High School in Ste. Agatha, Maine. In the fall of 1997, he enlisted in the Army. On his return home, he was extremely proud of having served his country, but the realities of what he had seen and experienced left him with an enormous sense of suffering, bleak anguish, and confusion. For a time, he owned and ran White and Associates, building piers and doing other marine related work. When his equipment was ruined in a freak accident, and life was at its worst, he met Carrie Betts whose courage and grace helped him survive. At the end of August, 2007, their son Pacey Michael Alan White, Nick's pride, joy, and absolute reason for living was born. Truly, his happiness knew no limits! With Pacey and Carrie, he rediscovered the strength and solace to be found in family, reaching out to everyone, helpful, eager, and HAPPY. In addition to his immediate family, Nick is survived by his special sisters-in-law, Rachael and Sarah, nieces Katherine and Hannah, new nephew Jesse, Aunts Sally, Mary, Brenda, and Uncles Ken, Peter, and Jimmy, along with many cousins and friends, all of whom we thank in Nick's name for the amity and support they showed him in life. On November 6, driving from Maine to Massachusetts for work, he died suddenly and unexpectedly amid photos of his cherished Carrie and Pacey. While plans are still being formulated, there will be a private family viewing of Nick at the Fitzgerald & Collins Funeral Home, 378 Lincoln Street, Marlborough, MA. Some of his ashes will be dispersed in North Haven waters, with the rest buried at the Maine Veterans' Cemetery.. Additionally, a fund for Pacey is being established, with full details to follow along with additional updates as available. Nick left behind a note to Carrie. Scrawled in haste as he left their apartment one day, it said in part, "Close your eyes and smile. I am dreaming of you. I love you, Nick" How WE loved YOU, Nicholas! There's something to say about salvation, it's worth more than any prize. You saw it in your son, I could see it in your eyes. So whisper to me when I don't know what to do. I'll try to raise our child the best I can without you and when he is older and wonders what we had, I'll tell him, all the love in the world and you still had your dad. So don't ever forget me and please watch over your son and when I get to heaven we'll finish the life we had begun. - Carrie Betts
