Maia Khandolishvili, a cherished mother, grandmother, and dedicated educator, passed away peacefully at her home in Marlborough on April 8, 2026. She spent her entire life, including the last days of her journey surrounded by her devoted family. Maia’s life was a tapestry of love, kindness, good humor, and warmth for her family, those she loved and the community at large.

Born on May 1, 1943, in Tbilisi, Georgia the graduate of the University of Pedagogy in Tbilisi, Maia grew into a creative elementary school teacher, appreciated both by her young students and their parents. Her curious mind lead her onto an administrative career for the Writers Union, a role she fulfilled with commitment and grace for many years. Her professionalism was praised by many generations of students and colleagues.

A gifted woman , Maia is warmly remembered for her delicious cooking, which brought warmth and joy to family gatherings. Her days were filled with quiet pleasures of reading and solving crossword puzzles, activities that mirrored her thoughtful and reflective nature. Maia was also deeply moved by the nature, often marveling at its beauty and finding solace in its presence.

Those who knew her remember Maia as a loving and kind soul, unafraid to share her opinions with gentle care and consideration. She wholeheartedly believed in teaching her children and grandchildren the importance of respect and empathy, values she embodied throughout her life.

Maia adored her family, and her devotion to them was evident in every aspect of her life. She is survived by her daughters Violeta Khandolishvili and Mariana Khandolishvili, together with her husband Tatevos. Her beloved grandchildren, David Matevosian and Ani Matevosian, both of Marlborough. The family is committed to carrying forward her legacy of love and integrity. Maia’s circle of family extended to her nephew David Kalugin of Marlborough and her cousin Inga Didebashvili of Tbilisi, Georgia, all of whom treasured her profound warmth and wisdom.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ruben Papopian, who passed away in 2003, and she was the beloved daughter of the late David and Maria (Bebutashvili) Khandolishvili.

To honor Maia’s memory, a visitation will be held on Sunday April 12, 2026, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Collins Funeral Home, located at 378 Lincoln Street, Marlborough, MA 01752. Following this, a graveside service will take place on Monday April 13 at 12 noon at Evergreen Cemetery on Wilson Street, Marlborough.

Maia Khandolishvili’s legacy is one of love, education, and kindness—a beacon of light whose memory will forever illuminate the hearts of those fortunate enough to have known her.
