Maia Khandolishvili, cherished mother, grandmother, and dedicated educator, passed away peacefully at her home in Marlborough on April 8, 2026. Born on May 1, 1943, in Tbilisi, Georgia, Maia’s life was a tapestry of devotion, kindness, and unwavering love for her family and community.
Educated at the Institute of Education in Tbilisi, where she earned her Bachelor of Arts degree, Maia began her career as an elementary school teacher. Her passion for nurturing young minds later guided her to serve as an administrator for the Writers Union, a role she fulfilled with commitment and grace for many years.
A woman of many gifts, Maia was lovingly known for her delicious cooking, which brought warmth and joy to family gatherings. Her afternoons often found her engaged in quiet pleasures like reading and solving crosswords, activities that mirrored her thoughtful and reflective nature. Maia was also deeply moved by the natural world, often marveling at its beauty and finding solace in its presence.
Those who knew her remember Maia as a loving and kind soul, unafraid to share her opinions gently and with care. She wholeheartedly believed in teaching her children and grandchildren the importance of respect and empathy, values she embodied throughout her life.
Maia adored her family, and her devotion to them was evident in every aspect of her being. She is survived by her daughters Violeta Khandolishvili and Mariana Khandolishvili, together with her husband Tatevos. Her beloved grandchildren, David Matevosian and Ani Matevosian, both of Marlborough, carry forward her legacy of love and integrity. Maia’s circle of family extended to her nephew David Kalugin of Marlborough and her cousin Inga Didebashvili of Tbilisi, Georgia, all of whom treasured her profound warmth and wisdom.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ruben Papopian, who passed away in 2003, and she was the beloved daughter of the late David and Maria (Bebutashvili) Khandolishvili.
To honor Maia’s memory, a visitation will be held on Sunday April 12, 2026, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Collins Funeral Home, located at 378 Lincoln Street, Marlborough, MA 01752. Following this, a graveside service will take place on Monday April 13 at 12 noon at Evergreen Cemetery on Wilson Street, Marlborough.
