Framingham- Jay Goodman Engel, Jr., 74, died Saturday at home in Framingham after a two year battle with myelodysplastic syndrome. He was the husband of Diane Ferguson Engel. A Shakespeare scholar and professional storyteller, he taught English at St. Mark's School in Southborough for forty-two years. He was born in Baltimore, Md., graduated from Dartmouth College in 1954 with a B.A. in English Literature, and earned his Master of Arts in Teaching from Harvard University in 1956. After traveling and studying in Europe, he began his lifelong career as an English teacher at St. Mark's School, where he instituted a visiting lecture series of eminent American poets, musicians, writers, and political leaders. He also organized frequent student group trips into Boston and Providence for concerts and theater, and in the 1990's he initiated an annual student and faculty bus trip to dinner and a performance of the Metropolitan Opera in New York. He was an avid theatergoer and supporter of the Huntington Theater Company and American Repertory Company. Mr. Engel also became a professional storyteller, performing at local coffeehouses, arts centers, bookstores, inns, schools, and private homes. For many years, he offered an elective in storytelling to seniors at St. Mark's School. He was a member of LANES (League for the Advancement of New England Storytelling), and participated in the Three Apples Storytelling Festival, as well as informal storytelling gatherings in the Boston area. Mr. Engel also leaves his son, Eric Jay Engel of Ann Arbor, Mich.; Karen Marsden of Edmonton, Alberta; Sarah Syah of Natick, Mass., and three grandsons, Noah and Leo Marsden, and Jaya Syah. A memorial service will be held at the St. Mark's School Chapel at 3:00 PM on Saturday, Dec. 16.
