BERLIN - Edward "Eddie" Mayo, 82, of Berlin, formerly of East Bridgewater, died Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2009, at UMass Memorial Medical Center. He was the husband of Arlene M. (Murphy) Mayo for the past 55 years. Born in Brockton, the son of the late Rocco and Stephania (Gobies) Mayo, he was a graduate of South Boston High School and Suffolk University, where he received his B.A. degree in history. A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he was a contract administrator for the U.S. government for many years, retiring in 1987. Eddie was a sports enthusiast, avid reader, world traveler, tennis player, and as a young man, played semi-professional baseball for the Washington Senators. He loved studying and discussing world history, and was an incredible storyteller who was often heard singing his favorite show tunes. In addition to his wife, he leaves two daughters, Stephanie C. Russell and her husband, Stephen, and Michaela M. Ross and her husband, Craig, all of Berlin; and five grandchildren, Isabella, Alexandra, Savanna and Ian Russell, and Taylor Ross, all of Berlin.
His funeral will be held Friday, Jan. 9, at 6:30 p.m., in the Lincoln Chapel of the Fitzgerald & Collins Funeral Home, 378 Lincoln Street, Marlborough. A time of visitation will be held prior to the service, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Burial will be private. Family and friends are invited to sign Eddie's online guestbook at www.SFCFH.com.
