Mary Binder-O'Connell Obituary

Mary E. (Santa) Binder-O’Connell, 76, of Bolton and formerly of Worcester died Friday April 26, 2024 at home surrounded by family after a long, courageous battle with ALS. She was the wife of Joseph B. O’Connell for the past 20 years.

Mary’s journey through life was marked by warmth, generosity, and a zest for living fully. Born in Detroit, Michigan, she found her roots in San Jose, California, where she was nurtured by her parents, Arthur and Dorothy Santa. Mary's education at Camden High School laid the foundation for her career in healthcare, which began as a medical assistant for Dr. Charles Birbara in Worcester. Her dedication to compassionate care spanned a decade, followed by further service at Notre Dame Long Term Care until her retirement in 2020.

Beyond her professional life, Mary was a woman of many passions. Her love for literature led her on countless trips to the library, where she would return home with armfuls of books to devour. Her green thumb transformed her garden into a vibrant sanctuary, reflecting her nurturing spirit. Among the cherished beings in her life was her beloved cat, Mochi, whose presence brought her immense joy. She loved to cook and bake.  While living in California she would grow and can her own fruits.

Mary's kindness and selflessness knew no bounds. Even in her own struggles, she always prioritized the well-being of others, embodying the true essence of generosity. Her infectious sense of humor and outspoken nature endeared her to many, while her advocacy for her loved ones left a lasting impact.  Mary’s legacy of love, kindness, and resilience will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing her.

In addition to her husband Joseph B. O’Connell, Mary leaves her loving daughter, Heidi Binder-Matsuo and her husband Deli. Mary’s beloved cousin (a.k.a her sister) Donna Foster, devoted sister-in-law Sayaka Lowe, step-grandsons Kenzo and Yudi Matsuo, and step-daughters Heather Currier and Hillary Swan will hold her memory dear as will her brother and numerous nephews.

While funeral services and cremation will be private, a Celebration of Life will be held at a later date to honor Mary's memory. In the meantime, all are invited to share their condolences and memories on Mary's online guestbook at collinsfuneral.com.  In lieu of flowers, donations in Mary’s memory may be made to Compassionate Care ALS or ALS One.  Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care of the Collins Funeral Home, 378 Lincoln Street, Marlborough.
