Lois Breingan Obituary

Lois M. (Huss) Breingan, 88, of West Harwich died Saturday, February 3, 2024.  Her husband of 65 years, John D. Breingan died in 2018.

She was born in Boston, raised in Dorchester and Quincy and was the daughter of the late Albert W. and Rita A. (Meehan) Huss, and was a 1953 graduate of North Quincy High School.  Lois was a homemaker when the children were young and then worked as an executive secretary for Digital Equipment Corporation in Maynard and Stratus Computer in Marlborough. Lois and her husband, “Dan” retired and moved to West Harwich, where she volunteered at the Harwich Council on Aging for many years.

Lois was a loving mother to her five children; she was a wonderful cook and had quite the green thumb. A running joke between Lois and Dan revolved around managing the family finances. After one month of Dan taking over the finances from Lois, he quickly realized how well she was able to stretch a dollar and happily turned the responsibility back over to her. Lois was credited with getting the family interested in camping and they spent many summers in the mountains of New Hampshire. For over 25 years, Lois and Dan hosted two big family events on the Cape which would last several days: Thanksgiving, and a family reunion which coincided with the Irish Pub Road race. She truly was the matriarch of the family. Lois was extremely kind and generous and always remembered everyone’s birthday and anniversary. She loved playing cards, in particular, Pitch and Scat. Lois enjoyed traveling to Boothbay Harbor and Monhegan Island with Dan, and trips to Diamond Island on Lake Winnipesaukee with the whole family. She also loved her weekend trips with “the girls”.

She leaves a son Robert J. Breingan and his wife Pam of Wakefield; two daughters, Lois M. Salerni and her husband Tony of Bedford, NH and Joan M. Collins and her husband Frank of Marlborough; a sister Priscilla McGowan and her husband John of Braintree; eleven grandchildren, Leah, Cori, JD, Nick, Kyle, Chrissy, Anthony, Jaime, Michael, Emily and Meghan; and eleven great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her son, John “Danny” Breingan of Marlborough, her daughter & son-in-law, Donna M. and Steven E. Grote of Hudson. She also leaves behind many nieces and nephews from New York and cousins from the South Shore.

There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to a charity of your choice. All are invited to sign her online guestbook at collinsfuneral.com.  Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Collins Funeral Home, 378 Lincoln Street, Marlborough.
