Dear Sisters of Good Shepherd...and I know that you are good shepherds to many.  My sincere sympathy for your great loss of a wonderful woman, Helene Hayes.  I only knew Helene when she contacted me for the Bakhita Initiative and told me about her interviews with victims of trafficking.  I looked forward to reading the results of her research and of meeting her personally some day.  May she rest in the peace of Christ.

Dear Sister John Mary Hayes, Sister Mary Ita Hayes and Sisters of the Good Shepherd Center,

I am so saddened to learn of Sister Helene's death.

While teaching at Boston College, I had the pleasure of getting to know Sister Helene, first as a student in one of the doctoral courses I taught and then as the chair of her dissertation and, later, the honor of writing the preface to her book.

I so very much respect how she seemed to approach all things, with wonderful humor, honesty and extraordinary competence, that I always felt were only surpassed by her deep and genuine commitment and passion to serve others.  She touched my life and I know many others.

I will miss her.

I hope and trust that the memory of many good times with her and what she accomplished on behalf of so many people softens the loss to you and the Good Shepherd Sisters.

With respect and care,

Eric Kingson

What can I say.....the world has lost one of its angels.  It is all of our loss!  Sr. Helene was always there for me, being for me whatever I needed at different points in my life.  Helping me to become the woman I am today.   I was blessed to be a mount girl who has known unique and amazing people like Sr. Helene.

I knew Sister Helene (Mother as we called her) from 1969-1972 while living at St. Germaine's in Peekskill. In my minds eye she is always smiling. She loved us girls and we loved her right back.  May she rest in peace and may God's love surround her family at this time.

Dear Sisters,

I knew Sr. Helene only briefly by means of her anti trafficking work but even that slight experience led to my being very inspired by and deeply honoring of her spirit, kindness and intelligence.
