Dear Jan,
I am very sorry to hear about your mom. I know she was such a lovely and generous lady and was very much loved by you, your family and many others. Punky has always been so fond of your mom and the friendship you have shared for over 60 years. I am thinking of you and your family during this very sad time. Love, Theresa

Thank you so much, Theresa. I appreciate your kind words and thoughts. It has been almost exactly a year since I spent some time with you and your family after your mom died. They sure were amazing women - living such long lives and leaving a legacy of children, grandchildren and great grandchildren to remember them. Punky will be visiting me at the end of March. I can't wait!
Love, Jan

Dear Maggie,

You were such a great grandmother and wonderful person! I will always cherish the memories i have of you. Whether it be the spaghetti sauce you made (with carrots because beta carotene is good for your eyes), or your love of golf (which I inherited) and the joy you had showing me your tourney trophies, to the times we spent in Marlboro together watching golf on TV, I will never forget you and the amount of joy your brought everyone that came in contact with you. It gives me great solace to know that you and Jack are now back together for eternity. I can see you guys now out on the heavenly golf course sinking putts on your way to another golf title.

Love you Queen Amadahlla!

Neil

Awww, Neily, you and Maggie did share many happy golf moments together. She was always a little disappointed that I did not develop a love of golf, but she was thrilled to share golf with you. As for that carrot spaghetti sauce.....that was a new one one me....innovating for her grandchildren! I know she is up there, pausing from golf to receive this messages and sending her love to us.
I love you, Mom

March 8, 2017

I met Marge, Mrs. Geist to me, when her family moved to my neighborhood in 1958. Jan and I were already classmates and we became fast friends. Through Jan I got to share in Mrs. Geist’s mothering skills. She brought a dimension to my life that was completely different from what was familiar to me.

In trying to put this together I was genuinely startled to think of how many mind expanding experiences she exposed me to that have greatly influenced me.
I am sure that my interest in politics stems directly from when Jan and I wore Kennedy buttons all over our boleros at St. John’s Elementary. It was so exciting. That year Mrs. Geist ran for a County Commissioner position on the Democratic ticket. The fact that my friends’ Mother was going around campaigning was way out of the realm of what I had seen so far in life. Three years later when Kennedy was Lying in State, Mrs. Geist took Jan and I to downtown Washington where we stood in line all night in order to walk through the rotunda of the Capitol. It was a whole new world and I’ve been hooked ever since.

She also introduced me to theater. Jan was in a drama class that put on the play Babes in Toyland. I went to see the play with the Geist family and was completely mesmerized. First of all, here was Jan inside a big box center stage and you don’t know she’s even in there and suddenly she does summer saults out of the box and surprises everyone. I had no idea there was even such a thing as live theater. Going to a play is still one of my favorite things to do. What a gift that has been.

I learned to waterski on a Geist family vacation in Florida, found out what delicious spaghetti tastes like, and saw the frenzy she was in when she realized we were playing polio with our croquet mallets. Through Mrs. Geist via Jan I learned that I should be giving part of my allowance to Indian children in North Dakota and through Jan via her Mother they introduced me to the joy of reading. She took us shopping at the big beautiful downtown D.C. stores that I didn’t know existed and had great family dinners where I was often included. When I look back and think about it there were many life enlightening moments inspired by Mrs. Geist. She had a zest and a fearlessness that I think continued throughout her life and I am forever grateful that she was in mine.
Sincerely,
Punky Kiefer

Punky, I will always cherish these words about my mom. You have brought back so many memories from my childhood. You say that you are glad that my mom was in your life. She was glad too. She loved and cared about you and as long as she was able, she would ask me "Have you talked to Punky lately?' She would be so touched to know the impact she had on your life. Thank you for sharing it! Love, Jan

Maggie was a truly spectacular Grandmother, but even more amazing was her FAITH! Even now that Maggie has passed, I am still comforted by her faith in God and his goodness. I know Maggie is still with us and praying for all of us daily.

Also, the word is that Maggie is playing 36 holes a day and hitting the ball straighter and further than ever. However, I have not been able to confirm this.

Rest in Peace GG.

Awww, Jeremy, she did have so much faith....such strong faith and I know you have always admired that. And the golf....if the afterlife is a place where you get what you want, she is definitely hitting the ball better than ever! She is probably leaning on her golf club right now saying a prayer for all of us....and her backswing!
I love you,
Mom

Jeremy, I can't confirm this either, but I'm pretty sure she got a hole in one today! You are so right about Maggie's faith - complete and all encompassing. It would mean so much to her to know how much that matters to you. I'm pretty sure she is checking out these notes, so I guess she does know!
I love you,
Mom
